that there are so many negative people in this world. There are so many things to recognize in life that are beautiful, and I cherish those simple things everyday. Yesterday I witnessed something quite tragic flash before my eyes. My heart completely stopped. Everything was silent in a…
Havent felt this good in a while.
Alright. Well. In America, minority is someone who is different. Someone who stands out because he or she is not like the other. Strangely enough, when the settlers landed on the East Coast of America on (some date that I wish I was cocktail party worthy enough to know), they were the minority. Over the years, what, with immigrants from England and Ireland coming to America for freedom and a new lifestyle, the majority changed, in what seems like it was overnight. Today, Americans all over define an American as what? Someone who resides in America? Well I personally think that only half of the population believes that. The other half defines an American, as you….an American. A white, country loving, hard working, American who loves country before self. Well…what about that Japanese man who works at the store on the corner of 43rd and Westminster? Hes not American? Why not? He speaks English. Slang and everything. Drives a Chevy truck. Works hard, and actually tunes to the country station every now and then. Why isn’t he an American? Oh, because his grandfather moved here when he was in desperate need of a job, arrived, got paid minimum wage, and literally worked to death to keep his family alive? Or is it because his skin just isn’t as white as yours, his nose is too sharp, and his eyes don’t stay open enough? And what about that black woman. Why isn’t she American? Because her skin is much too dark for your liking? Because her ancestors were forced here from another land so she is not from here? And what does that make you? Oh and shes lazy too? How do you know that? Oh..because that lady that works at the school is, so they must all be the same huh? Right? Alright, I guess that makes sense, if your as close minded as you sound. Well….what about me then? Am I not as American as you? I’m mixed, but my skin is black, so you label me as one of them. Sure, fine, Ill let you call me black. Its confusing to you and you cant understand a concept so different. Well here, have it your way, Ill label myself as black for you. Does that make me lazy, stupid, and un-american? Well on the theater that we call the media, yes, America isn’t that racist, it isn’t that prejudice, it isn’t that close minded. But walk into the homes of a lot of these Americans and you’ll see what goes on backstage. I know this because I see their children, the product of the the production. And these aren’t just any old random kids, these are supposed to be the cream of the crop of America. I go to one of the premier schools for developing future leaders for our country, and I have NEVER encountered such racism and close mindedness. In high school I was a minority, but I never really felt it. Here, I feel the fact that I’m a minority every day. I don’t hate people for doing that, I just understand that some people here are nothing more than associates.
